Leeds Rhinos forward Morgan Gannon refusing to rest on his laurels ahead of England Knights debut

Morgan Gannon could be forgiven for taking his foot off the gas.

The 17-year-old has enjoyed an unforgettable first season with Leeds Rhinos, and looks destined for a bright future. So the opportunity to refresh, recharge and refocus ahead of what will almost certainly be an even bigger 2022 at Headingley would have been ideal for Gannon: but he isn't done this year yet.

Gannon has earned his first international call-up into the England Knights squad for Friday's clash with Jamaica at Castleford, and typically of a player who looks set for a big career at the top of the sport, Gannon is already thinking even further ahead.

"We're all here wanting to do the same thing - we have a point to prove and we're looking forward to it," Gannon said earlier this week. "Everyone here wants to push on and get that senior jersey. But there's a lot of talent in this group.

"It's promising when you look at what's coming up and through the system. There's a bright future. It is a bit weird though, because this last year has been a bit crazy, but it's a good position to be in and I'm very grateful to be here."

Given his age, Gannon is perhaps a surprise inclusion in Paul Anderson's squad. It certainly caught the teenager off-guard. "I got a call on my phone and it came up, 'unknown number'," he recalled.

"It didn't know whether to answer it, but I'm glad I did because it was Paul Anderson. I wasn't expecting it, but it was a pleasant surprise."

Gannon's expectations for 2021 were exceeded in impressive fashion, and after making a huge impression on coach Richard Agar and the Leeds first-team, he is eyeing big things in 2022.

“I was happy to get my first full 80 minutes, and I have kind of kicked on a bit from there," he said. “That was one of the things I was thinking or when I was playing 20 and 30 minutes in the middle: I wanted to get a good 80 minutes and I’m glad I’ve done that a few times this year.

“I want to have a good pre-season and kick on for next year too."
