Morgan Burnett’s contract indicates a high level of commitment by the Browns

Based on the details of Morgan Burnett’s contract with the Cleveland Browns, those of us who thought he was maybe competing for a job at safety need to recalibrate. The deal, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, indicate the Browns are counting on Burnett to play a big role.

Rapoport reports the team signed Burnett to a 2-year deal for $9 million, with nearly $4 million fully guaranteed. That’s a hefty commitment to the 30-year-old Burnett, who played 2018 in Pittsburgh but spent most of his NFL career in Green Bay.

To put it in perspective, Eric Murray will make $2.03 million as his (current) primary competition in the final year of his rookie deal, with no more than $100,000 guaranteed in a bonus.

It’s starter money for Burnett.

Does that mean he’ll start? No, but the contract is a strong indication the Browns are comfortable having Burnett line up with old Packers mate Damarious Randall as the starting safety tandem in Week 1.
