Moreno Veloso: Coisa Boa review – his dad will love it!

Inventive … Moreno Veloso.
Inventive … Moreno Veloso

Like Teddy Thompson or Ziggy Marley, Moreno Veloso is a musician with a simple problem: he will inevitably be compared to his dad. He’s the son of Caetano Veloso, a legend in Brazil, which perhaps explains why he has been reluctant to promote his career. It has been 13 years since he released a solo album, and in that time he has worked with friends Domenico Lancellotti and Alexandre Kassin on the inventive +2 project, and produced several of his father’s recordings. But now, at last, Moreno is back with a charming, laid-back set, immaculately recorded in studios across Brazil and the US. His singing is gently languid, the emphasis on melody rather than experiment, and the songs range from the summery title track to the slinky and lilting Um Passa à Frente and the exquisite, drifting De Tentar Voltar. His dad will love it.
