Moredun violence 'was linked' to stabbing in Gilmerton as police step up patrols in the area

An Edinburgh MP has claimed that Monday's violence in Moredun was linked to an incident in which a person was stabbed in Gilmerton.

Edinburgh Live reported yesterday (Tuesday) that a large number of youths were involved in a disturbance to the south of the city. Residents reported seeing masked teens smashing car windows.

This came a day after a teenager was stabbed in the nearby Gilmerton. Emergency services were called to Gilmerton Road on Sunday evening and cordoned off the area before the victim was rushed to hospital.

Edinburgh South MP Ian Murray has now said that police told him the incidents are linked, and that extra patrols will be in place in the south of the city in the coming days as a result.

He posted on social media: "I have spoken with the police this morning and they have confirmed that the disturbance involving 30 youths was related to the stabbing in Gilmerton the previous day.

" Police were able to break up the incident and one arrest was made. The collision with one of the youths is being investigated by the police."

Mr Murray added that an extra ten officers have been relocated from elsewhere in the city to conduct patrols in Moredun and Gilmerton as a result. This will continue until the end of the Easter holidays.

A large CCTV van has also been deployed in the area as an inquiry team collects evidence from members of the public who witnessed the Moredun disorder.

Police confirmed that their enquiries were ongoing.
