Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce made something of a statement with his team sheet against Morecambe tonight.
On a soaking night on the North West coast, Bruce included his captain Jamaal Lascelles and started with Miguel Almiron.
He made nine changes to the side that lost to Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.
There was a start for Jacob Murphy and Bruce kept faith with Sean Longstaff after a disappointing show against Blackburn Rovers in the second round.
Bruce also has plenty in reserve with Callum Wilson, Jonjo Shelvey and Andy Carroll on the bench.
A tie at League Two Newport County awaits the victors tonight.
