More workers in east end of Glasgow furloughed than anywhere else in the country

More workers from the east end of Glasgow have been furloughed than anywhere else in the country.

Glasgow East had the highest take-up rate of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme in Scotland with around 15,000 people furloughed - around 36% of all workers in the area.

Around 88,300 workers in the city centre were furloughed - totally around 32% of all employees and 5% more than in Edinburgh's city centre.

The majority of those furloughed by the end of June were construction workers with 72% of all those in the industry unable to work.

In Scotland, a total of around 736,500 have been furloughed due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures released by HMRC.

Thousands of self-employed workers in Glasgow have also made claims for financial help during the crisis.

Around 155,000 claims for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme, totalling to £449 million, have been made by Scots.

Around 74% of all self-employed people in the country took up the government scheme up to June 30.

The majority of self-employed workers in Scotland who claimed were male with 66% asking for government assistance. Of the total amount of self-employed support, 73% of it was claimed by men.

The number of employees furloughed is likely to fall as businesses begin to reopen.

Firms will start paying towards the scheme from August. It will then close in October, with employers receiving a £1,000 bonus for every furloughed worker they keep on until January 2021.
