Glasgow weather: More warnings issued by Met Office as city faces wet and windy weekend

Two further weather warnings for wind and rain have been issued by the Met Office for Glasgow for tomorrow.

The Yellow warning for rain is in place for city from 3am until 7pm tomorrow, while a Yellow warning for strong winds has also been put in place from 6am to 9pm tomorrow.

Heavy rains are expected to lead to a chance of travel disruption and flooding across Strathclyde, with very strong winds possibly leading to some disruption also.

The Met Office alert for rain reads: "Persistent and heavy rain is expected to spread northeast across Scotland on Saturday morning, with 20-40 mm rain falling quite widely across southern, western and central Scotland and perhaps more than 60 mm over hills and mountains.

"Given the time of year, strong winds will lead to enhanced leaf fall, which may result in additional surface water flooding due to the blocking of drainage channels."

And the alert for strong winds reads: "A belt of very strong and possibly squally southerly winds will develop on Saturday morning with gusts of 60-65 mph, perhaps 70 mph on exposed coasts and hills.

"The winds will become more westerly during the afternoon and gradually ease across England and Wales. However they will remain very strong across Scotland and Northern Ireland into the evening, with possible gusts around 75 mph across the Western Isles.

Residents have been warned to prepare for the following in respect to the heavy rain:

  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

And in respect to the strong winds:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
