More wearing masks would encourage Londoners to return, poll reveals

More widespread use of face masks could play a major role in persuading Londoners to return to the centre of the capital and start spending money again, a poll reveals today.

The survey asked which of a range of measures would make respondents “more likely to go into London to work or enjoy leisure time.”

The most reassuring suggestion was “everyone following social distancing rules so it feels safer”, which was supported by four out of 10 of those asked. This was closely followed “more people wearing face masks” backed by 37 per cent.

Wearing face masks has been compulsory on public transport since June 15 and will be mandatory in shops from July 24. However, the Government has knocked down suggestions that they may have to be worn in offices as well.

Other suggested popular measures included “clearer messages from the Government about safety” with 34 per cent approval and “more frequent public transport to reduce crowding” on 32 per cent.

However, the £10 off restaurant and pub meals vouchers announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in his summer statement last week appears to be less of an incentive with only 27 per cent saying they make a difference.

The polling comes after the Standard revealed the scale of the meltdown facing the central London economy with less than a quarter of commuters back in their offices.

It is estimated that the West End alone faces 50,000 job losses. Research reported by the Standard yesterday showed that as many as a third of workers may still be staying away from their offices by the end of the year.
