More 'visible presence' of staff on trams as ticket checks to increase

Ticket checks on Nottingham's trams have returned to a regular frequency - and will stepped up as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease.

Tram operator NET informed passengers via email that its revenue team would "have a more visible presence along the network" from the start of the week.

With the reopening of non-essential businesses on Monday (April 12), NET warned that "anyone caught without a valid ticket or pass will be liable for a £50 fine".

The company previously made the call to minimise the contact between customers and staff in a move that meant passenger tickets weren't checked for a period.

A spokesman for the tram operator has now clarified that it has "re-introduced regular checks", saying that the checks will also be increased in the coming weeks when further restrictions lift.

A NET spokesman said: “While the most stringent coronavirus restrictions were in place, we took the sensible decision to minimise close contact between staff and customers and this included the suspension of our regular ticket checking operations.

“However, as more people return to the network, customers expect us to resume enforcement activities to ensure everyone pays the correct fare and we’ve re-introduced regular checks.

"These are planned to increase over the coming weeks, in step with government’s guidance on the easing of restrictions.

“As many people may not have used the tram for a while, we would also like to take this opportunity to remind them of the requirement to buy a ticket before they board, either at the tram stop ticket machine or in advance by using the NETGO! app.”

NET's travel centre will remain closed until the end of May, with details about its reopening to be announced nearer the time.
