More victims of Lisbon funicular crash identified

  • A funicular railway in Lisbon, Portugal, derailed and crashed into a building, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 people and injuring 23 others.
  • Among the deceased was Andre Jorge Goncalves Marques, a brake guard on the Gloria funicular, with other victims including former volleyball referee Pedro Manuel Alves Trindade and lawyer Alda Matias.
  • Prime Minister Luís Montenegro described the incident as "one of the biggest human tragedies of our recent history," and a day of national mourning has been declared in Portugal.
  • Initial reports suggest the funicular's cable came loose, prompting the suspension of three other funicular railways in Lisbon and the launch of internal and external investigations.
  • Victims and injured individuals include multiple nationalities, with officials confirming two Canadians, one German, one Ukrainian, and one American among the dead, and a wide range of nationalities among the injured.
