More Trafford hotspots manage to ‘suppress’ coronavirus

More previous Covid-19 hotspots in Trafford have managed to ‘suppress’ the virus.

According to data on the government’s interactive Covid-19 tracking map, these areas had fewer than three new cases confirmed in the week ending March 2.

In the government’s own words, it means the areas have ‘suppressed’ the virus – as things stand.

Firswood, Trafford Park East and Sevenways, Trafford Park West and Kingsway Park and Sale East all previously experienced stubbornly high infection rates and case numbers and had done since the start of the pandemic.

Just two months ago at the beginning of January 2021, Firswood became a hotspot across the whole of Greater Manchester when its individual infection rate soared to 659.2 per 100,000 – one of the highest individual ward rates of any area in the city-region.

Now though, the areas each had fewer than three cases confirmed in the week up to March 2.

Last week, Bowdon, Timperley South, Hale and Hale Barns all had fewer than three cases confirmed in the seven days ending February 24 and had therefore managed to ‘suppress’ the virus.

However, all of these areas – except for Bowdon – have since seen a slight uptick, recording four confirmed cases in the seven days to March 2, narrowly losing their previous status.

Partington still has the highest infection rate in the borough, with 19 positive Covid-19 cases confirmed there in the same period.

Its rolling infection rate is 221.6 per 100,000 people.

With schools returning from today (March 8), Director for Public Health in Trafford Eleanor Roaf warned infection rates are likely to increase over the coming weeks, but hopefully the borough has done enough to get rates down over the last few weeks ahead of this happening.
