More thundersnow forecast as Glasgow hit with week of wintry showers and ice warnings

Earlier, this month Glasgow was gripped by a weather phenomenon known as thundersnow.

The city was hit by snow, wind and thunder as Storm Ciara battered the UK.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for ice is in place from 8pm today until 10am tomorrow, forecasts predicting "Further wintry showers across the north of the UK, with icy patches leading to possible hazardous travel."

However, as the week continues, the outlook for Wednesday to Friday is predicting that we may see the return of thundersnow.

The forecast reads: "A mixture of sunny spells and wintry showers, these heavy at times with a chance of hail and thunder. Remaining cold with overnight frosts and a risk of ice."

The rare weather phenomenon occurs when thunderstorms - which are much more common in summer months - form in wintry conditions.

If the weather is cold, the rain that falls as part of a thunderstorm can turn to snow and is therefore is called thundersnow.

Its rarity is due to the fact it can only occur in a few months of the year.

The Met Office explains that snow dampens the sound of thunder - meaning that thundersnow can only be heard if you are within two to three miles of the lightning.

It can bring serious visibility issues and drivers are advised to make sure they are prepared, should thundersnow hit.
