More than one accident every month on dual carriageway between cities

Figures have revealed nearly 60 accidents were recorded on the A90 between Perth and Dundee in under four years.

Data obtained by the Scottish Conservatives through a Freedom of Information request showed 57 collisions were recorded on the stretch from January 1, 2017, and October 30 last year - more than one accident every month.

It comes as Transport Scotland confirmed a safety audit of the road will take place this summer as part of its annual review.

In a letter to Murdo Fraser, the Tory candidate for Perthshire North at next month’s Scottish election, Transport Scotland director of roads Hugh Gillies said: “We undertake an annual assessment (annual road safety review) of the safety performance of the trunk road network, including the A90.

“Whilst we consider accident patterns and rates in the form of route accident reduction plans (RARP), we also screen all locations where three or more personal-injury accidents have occurred in a three year period. Further investigations are then carried out and, where appropriate, mitigation measures are prioritised for delivery.”

Mr Gillies also said the review would take place in July and August this year.

Responding to the accident figures, Mr Fraser said: “Fifty-seven accidents in three years is a high number for a dual carriageway and it emphasises what we have been saying about the majority of motorists not being aware that they are no longer travelling on a motorway when they drive over the Friarton Bridge on their way to Dundee or further north/north-east.”

Councillor Angus Forbes, who represents the Carse of Gowrie ward, added: “This is a fast and busy road and the number of accidents that have taken place have been a concern to me and my constituents.”
