More than half of Weston-super-Mare's beach huts remain empty

Beach huts are part of Britain's Victorian seaside history.

Tiny painted huts, fitted out with everything needed for seaside living, the seaside des res's often attract premium prices.

But while some seaside resorts have seen the huts sold for £60,000 and a waiting list of people wanting to rent them, nearly half of the beach huts on Weston-super-Mare seafront remain unlet for the 2019 summer season.

The 24 colourful huts, painted in pastel colours, arrived on the seafront in 2015 and are available for holidaymakers and residents to rent.

They cost the authority £65,000, with the authority hoping cash from the rentals would cover their costs.

Initially the leases on the huts - which measure just 2.2 metres by 2.6 metres - were put up for auction on eBay, with the first fetching £2,650.

Others went under the hammer for prices ranging from £1,600 to £630.

Rules stipulate that the huts can only be occupied between 8am and sunset.

Red Arrows confirmed for summer display at Weston Air Festival 2019 before US tour

Now the council is offering the leases - which run for a season from April 1 until March 31 -  for £930 plus VAT.

But it seems as if interest in the wooden seaside homes has waned as four years on not as many people are coming forward to rent them.

A North Somerset Council spokeswoman said: "The huts are still a popular facility on Weston Seafront.

"Almost half of the huts are already let for this summer.

"The huts have more than paid for themselves and are an attractive additional to Weston’s beautiful seafront."

There are an estimated 20,000  beach  huts  at resorts across the UK, including Bournemouth, which has nearly 2,000 along its five and a half miles of promenade.

Around 70 per cent of Bournemouth’s  beach   huts  are privately owned, while the rest are let out by the council.

Other seaside resorts which have beach huts  include Scarborough and Broadstairs.

In Southwold in Suffolk a small  beach  hut which had stood on the sands for more than 100 years went up for sale with a price tag of £60,000.

People interested in leasing one of the huts can call the seafront and events team for further details on 01934 427 251.
