More than half of Scots think parents have been the worst affected by Covid

More than half of all Scots agree parents have been the hardest hit by the coronavirus epidemic, according to new research.

The study says 58 percent of people in Scotland think parents have been the worst affected by the pandemic because they have had to work, take care of and teach their children simultaneously.

The research also found that a quarter of all Scots parents fear their jobs would be at risk if their children's school close due to a Covid-19 outbreak or as part of a wider lockdown.

And a further seven percent of Scots parents say their employer has been unsympathetic to them having to manage childcare around work during the pandemic.

While 13 percent of Scots say having to take care of their child during the COVID period has set them back more than a year in their career.

Despite concerns the Scottish Government has said it will endeavour to keep schools open as the country grapples with trying to move through the pandemic.

Nicola Sturgeon is today setting out which local authorities will be placed where under the new five tier system.

However, whilst almost all of the tiers still recommend working from home, none of the tiers involve measures which would close schools.

Chris Biggs, Partner at  Theta Global Advisors, who conducted the research, said: "Thousands of parents found themselves in a situation of having to try and teach their kids while juggling working from home to help them catch-up on school work and lost hours in the classroom.

"This period has been incredibly disruptive to parents and children alike and employers need to recognise that working guardians are being stretched further and thinner than ever before."
