More than half of people think the North East SHOULD be moved into Tier 3, survey reveals

More than half of residents think the North East should be moved into the toughest Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions, according to a ChronicleLive survey.

As Covid-19 deaths in the region hit their highest level since June, the region was placed in to the 'high' risk category under the Government's new three-tier system.

This week the North East won a week's reprieve from Tier 3 but leaders have been told they must prove existing restrictions are working.

On Thursday the leaders of Northumberland, Newcastle, South and North Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and County Durham signed a joint statement urging the Government to not impose "devastating" coronavirus restrictions.

In the letter, the leaders said there was "evidence of a flattening of the curve" and that they could “make alert level 2 work”.

Gateshead Council Leader Martin Gannon later confirmed that the Government had agreed to give the region another week before a decision is made.

If coronavirus cases continue to soar it could go into Tier 3, which would see pubs, bars, barbers and gyms close.

But how do the people of the North East really feel about the latest restrictions?

More than 20,000 people responded to our survey on whether it was time for tighter lockdown measures - and more than half (55%) said they thought the North East should be placed in Tier 3.

A total of 12,226 respondents (58%) said they didn’t think Tier 2 measures were enough to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

But only half (51%) thought closing pubs and restaurants would help reduce the spread.

Almost 70% were worried about the spike in Covid-19 cases locally, and 65% didn’t think the Government was doing enough for businesses affected by the pandemic.

It comes as Lancashire joined the Liverpool region in entering Tier 3 on Saturday, with pubs and bars closed unless they can serve meals and household mixing banned indoors and in gardens.

Tier 2 measures were also introduced in London, Essex, York, Elmbridge, Barrow-in-Furness, North East Derbyshire, Erewash and Chesterfield.

They prohibit people mixing inside with those from other households, including in pubs and restaurants, renewing calls from businesses for greater financial support.
