More than half of London’s primary schools have signed up to film director Steve McQueen’s project to create a portrait of an entire generation.
So far 1,340 schools have registered to take part after the Oscar-winner unveiled his plan for a London-wide class photograph last year.
The Year 3 pupils and their teachers will pose for pictures which will go on show in Tate Britain in November. He said: “This project is extremely close to my heart. When we first announced it I had no idea how people would react, but the response has been amazing. I’d like to thank the schools for helping to make this idea a reality.”
McQueen made his name as a video artist, winning the Turner Prize in 1999, before breaking into cinema with hit films including 12 Years a Slave and Widows.
At least 65,000 seven and eight-year-olds will have their photographs taken as part of the project.
