More than half of Glaswegians think schools and workplaces should close due to coronavirus

More than half of Glaswegians think that schools and workplaces should close over to the coronavirus.

A survey of Glasgow residents found that more than 72 per cent believe that there should be stricter measures in place to protect the public.

Around 13 per cent said they believed that schools and workplaces should remain open while around 15 per cent said they didn’t know.

More than half of people in East Renfrewshire (65%), Ayrshire and Arran (56%), East Dunbartonshire (67%), North Lanarkshire (61%), South Lanarkshire (53%) and West Lothian (59%) also agree that the closures should be put in place.

So far, only a number of schools have closed temporarily due to the virus.

As previously reported by Glasgow Live, Isobel Mair School and Nursery in Newton Mearns was closed temporarily after a case was linked to the campus.

Lanark Grammar School and Kirkintilloch Primary School were also temporarily closed for deep cleaning in the last few weeks.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that, although mass gatherings will be banned from today, schools will remain open. All overseas school trips have been cancelled in the meantime.

In her statement, Ms Sturgeon said that the closure of schools, colleges and universities would have a “very direct effect on the ability to keep key workers at work”.

There are also worries that young people would gather in informal settings where the risk of spreading the virus was higher.

She added that if the schools do close, it “will not be for a week or two weeks”.

In the days since all Glasgow universities have cancelled face-to-face teaching, however, campuses remain open.

The University of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University and University of the West of Scotland have all asked students not to attend campus and complete their studies online instead.

The survey by In Your Area spoke to 136 respondents from Glasgow, 32 in Ayrshire and Arran, 20 in East Renfrewshire, 95 in North Lanarkshire, 75 in South Lanarkshire and 52 in West Lothian.
