More than half of all schools in Wales have had cases of coronavirus

Coronavirus cases in schools across Wales have risen this week after falling at  the end of the firebreak lockdown and half term.

A total 336 new cases among staff and pupils were recorded in the six days to November 18, compared with 268 in the week to November 11.

The rise, revealed in latest coronavirus in schools data published, means that for the first time more than half of all schools in Wales have now had a case of coronavirus .

Since the start of term in September there have been 2,798 reports of new Covid-19 cases across 805 schools; 1,254 cases in staff and 1,544 in pupils.

With 1,573 schools across Wales, this means 51.2% have been affected. Of those 313 only had one case.

In the past six days, once again, schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf are most affected and most of Wales' total 336 cases in that time were in primaries.

One in five schools reporting cases are in RCT, but the authority’s 61 school cases are a slight fall on the previous week’s total of 67.

The next highest number of school cases was reported in Swansea with 39, a rise of 23 on the previous week .

By contrast 13 cases were reported in schools in Merthyr (equal to the previous week), where the first mass testing in Wales is due to start this weekend.

Anglesey and Conwy were the least affected reporting just two cases each in all their schools between November 11 and 18 - although that does represent a rise for Anglesey.

This is how many staff cases of coronavirus there have been in schools by health authority area since September:

All secondary schools in these council areas have reported at least one coronavirus cases since term began:

Blaenau Gwent

Newport

Torfaen

Wrexham

Cardiff
