More than half a million people receive first dose of coronavirus vaccine

More than half a million people have now received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in the UK.

Updating the nation at a coronavirus press conference, the Prime Minister said that more doses were still being administered.

However when he was asked about when it would be rolled out into the wider community, the priority list would not be changing.

A member of the public – named as Rachael from Kent – asked a question at the Downing Street press conference about whether consideration would be given to rolling out the vaccine more widely in some geographical areas and to expand it to people who are of working age.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Joint Committee on Immunisation and Vaccination is sticking to its priority list.

He said: “What they want to do is take out of the path of the vaccine as many people who could be likely to die from Covid.

“I think that is the sensible thing to do, which is why we are focusing on the 80-plus group, those who are particularly vulnerable and in care homes.”

Now we have the vaccine coming we can "look forward to a very different world from Easter onwards", Mr Johnson says.

It's very important for peoples' morale. "We have every reason to be hopeful about this country's ability to bounce back next year from Covid.

"That's the right thing to say then and now."
