More than a third of Brits experience skin issues from air pollution, survey finds

More than a third of British people have experienced skin problems caused by air pollution, according to a survey.

A study by Perspectus Global involving over 2,000 individuals in the UK aged 16 and above revealed that the most frequent issues encountered were dryness (54 per cent), heightened dirtiness (45 per cent), blemishes (21 per cent) and early ageing signs (20 per cent).

Air pollution can lead to a range of skin problems, from premature ageing to eczema, according to dermatologists.

Pollutants like nitrogen dioxide can penetrate the skin, causing oxidative stress, which can damage cells and reduce the skin’s ability to regenerate.

The survey, carried out on behalf of Westfield’s ‘How We Shop’ platform, found that a third of Brits have adopted daily skincare routines to combat the negative impact of air pollution.

Women are still at the forefront of using skincare products (57 per cent), but an impressive 43 per cent of men surveyed are starting to get into anti-pollution skincare too.

The 30-44 age group is really into buying these products, with favourites like Dermalogica, Cerave, and Elemis emerging as popular choices.

Urban dwellers are most affected by the harmful impacts of air pollution, and more than a quarter (29 per cent) of those surveyed said they would consider moving to rural areas to improve their skin health.

Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme, Founder and Medical Director at the Adonia Clinic, said: In the face of escalating pollution levels, our skin becomes the frontline target of environmental aggression. The latest insights from Westfield underscore the pressing need to strengthen our skincare routine against the unseen threatslurking in our air.

“As we navigate through urban landscapes shrouded in pollution, let us not just shield our skin but empower it to withstand these challenges. Adonia Medical Clinic’s collaboration with Westfield epitomises this ethos. Join me and my team at The Beauty Edit, where we will be providing consultations towards glowing skin.”

Sarah Fearon, Head of Marketing UK at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, said: Our latest How We Shop research unveiled that 67 per cent of Brits will invest more in products that shield against air pollution if they understand its impact on their skin.

“This highlights people's desire to actively seek solutions to protect their skin, whether by adjusting their daily routines or investing in specialised products tailored to combat pollution.

This growing environmental consciousness is reshaping consumer attitudes and behaviours towards skincare.

Hence, we take pride in offering complimentary expert skin consultations and more at this year’s The Beauty Edit event. It's our commitment to championing not only beauty but also holistic health and confidence.”
