More than a dozen flats to be built on site of former primary school in Airdrie

North Lanarkshire Council’s latest housing project has been unveiled in Airdrie.

Alexandra Court, site of the former Albert Primary School, has seen £3.6 million of investment to create 14 two-bedroom cottage flats, including £826,000 from the Scottish Government.

Provost Jean Jones officially opened the new development in the council’s programme to deliver 5000 new homes by 2035, with the total number of houses completed now standing at 670.

After unveiling a commemorative plaque, the Provost visited residents John and Betty McGill in their new home and presented them with flowers.

Betty said: “We are delighted with our new home. We lived in a flat for 25 years and I have some difficulties with my mobility, so having everything on the ground floor now makes life much easier.

“We have a garden to enjoy and it’s a lovely, quiet street, close to the town centre and we have good neighbours. We are very happy here.”

All new council houses are built for varying needs standards, including wider doorways and other features to enhance their use.

They are also designed to be energy efficient to reduce electricity costs for tenants.

The properties at Alexandra Court also have dementia-friendly design features, including contrasting colours between kitchen units and flooring and between bathroom wall-boarding and flooring.

Councillor Heather McVey, convener of the council’s communities and housing committee, said: “Alexandra Court is the latest of our new-build council housing projects and it’s wonderful to see the tenants settled in and enjoying the benefits of their new homes.

“Every home we build is a step towards our pledge of 5000 new homes across North Lanarkshire, providing high-quality, modern, affordable accommodation for our residents.”

The development was completed by Robertson Partnership Homes, Mast Architects and Scott Bennett Associates.

James Freel, MD of Robertson Partnership Homes, said: “We’re proud to be working with North Lanarkshire Council to deliver a number of affordable homes at eight sites across the region.

“These projects, all of which were procured through Scape’s National Major Works framework, will ensure an increased supply of much needed high-quality accommodation for people in North Lanarkshire.

“The 14 properties we have built at Alexandra Court are built to last and we hope that they will contribute to the transformation of the local area.”
