More than 800 new jobs are announced in North East in September

More than 800 new jobs have been announced in the region this month as the green agenda and the rebounding economy have led to new employment opportunities.

This week saw JDR Cables announce plans for a £130m cable factory at Cambois, Northumberland, which will create 170 new jobs and also safeguard 270 at the company’s Hartlepool plant.

That announcement came the day after former North East Company of the Year Aspire Technology Solutions signalled 150 new jobs across two bases - its new Gateshead headquarters and a new office on Teesside.

Other major job announcements earlier in the month saw Consett caravan maker Erwin Hymer saying 200 jobs would follow a major investment, while Sunderland cleaning firm Maxim FM is looking to create 100 posts after a series of contract wins.

Frank Recruitment, II-VI Compound Semiconductors, BJSS, Everflow and Handbag Clinic have also released announcements on new jobs, while companies including Double Eleven, Contec, Brims and Chocolate Smiths have said they will be expanding.

The North East was boosted earlier in the month with falling unemployment rates that took the number of people claiming unemployment benefits below 100,000 for the first time in more than a year.

But there are fears that the closure of the furlough programme today could add to the number of people losing their jobs.
