Another 839 cases cases of coronavirus have been recorded across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, according to Government figures released on Friday (January 8).

Nationwide, the death toll now stands at 79,833 and 2,957,472 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

This represents an increase of 1,325 and 68,053 respectively in the past 24 hours.

It is the highest number of UK deaths reported on a single day since the outbreak began.

In Nottingham, there has been a rise of 298 - up from 210 yesterday - bringing the total to 21,745.

Across the wider county, there have been increases of 107 in Ashfield, 92 in Mansfield and 84 in Gedling.

The reproduction number, or R value, of coronavirus transmission across the UK is between 1 and 1.4, the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) said.

When R was last updated on December 23 2020, it was between 1.1 and 1.3.

R represents the average number of people each Covid-19 positive person goes on to infect.

When the figure is above 1, an outbreak can grow exponentially.

An R number between 1 and 1.4 means that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 10 and 14 other people.

Sage has said the estimates published on Friday represent the transmission of Covid-19 over the past few weeks rather than the present situation.

This is due to the time delay between someone being infected, having symptoms, and needing healthcare.
