More than 80 new litter bins installed across Newport

More than 80 new litter bins have been installed across Newport in an attempt to reduce the level of litter in the city.

The bins have been installed by Newport city council across several different wards, it confirmed in a statement.

A statement from the council said: "The move forms part of the council’s commitment to increase bin provision even further and reduce the levels of litter on our streets over the next few years."

The locations of the bins have been decided through "consultation with local volunteer litter picking groups, requests from the public and the experience of our street cleansing team, who have carried out the installation work."

New floor fixed bins have been installed in the areas:

• Allt-Yr-Yn

• Alway

• Bettws

• Beechwood

• Gaer

• Malpas

• Ringland

• Rogerstone

• St Julians

The council explained that a small number of the bins are direct replacements for smaller post-mounted bins. The council explained this this is to ensure greater capacity and tackle issues where bins have been found to be over-spilling in spite of regular emptying.

In addition, any smaller post mounted bins that have been replaced will now be redeployed to other areas across the city.

The council added: "We ask the public to use these bins responsibly and remind residents that they are not to be used for disposal of household waste."
