More than 80 horses and riders take part in 2019 Kirkcudbright Riding of the Marches

More than 80 horses took place in the historic Riding of the Marches in Kirkcudbright on Friday evening.

People turned out in huge numbers to enjoy the evening which saw horses and riders set off from Dee Walk to make their way around the town.

At the front of the procession were this year’s Cornet Angus Milby and Cornet’s Lass Hazel Murray. They were joined by pursuivant Donald Bell, courier Diane Warren and lynors Ben Johnstone, Hannah Murray, Tom MacTaggart and Heather Murray.

The evening also attracted visiting principals from Dumfries, Sanquhar and Wigtown with representatives from Lockerbie and Annan taking part on foot.

Kirkcudbright Cornets’ Club chairman, Aly Austin, said: “We had about 84 horses and there were two horse and carts as well.

“It stayed dry for us. Thunder and lightning was in the forecast and it was teeming down in places round about but we got it dry.

“There was a good crowd out on the night and we had five trophies for best turn-out— for senior, junior, lead reign, horse and cart and best turned out principal.”
