More than 75,000 heavy metal fans make their way to Slane Castle ahead of Metallica's sold-out gig

More than 75,000 Metallica fans are making their way to Slane Castle ahead of Metallica's hugely-anticipated concert this evening.

The American metal heavyweights are set to play at the iconic venue as part of their Worldwired Tour.

Fans are flocking from around the world to catch James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and Rob Trujilo perform at the Castle, with some coming from as far as Chile and the UAE to catch the show.

The legendary owner of Slane Castle Lord Henry Mountcharles is among the thousands of revellers in attendance ahead of Metallica's first Irish show since 2009.

Before the main event, a host of prominent rock bands will warm up revellers.

The hefty task of opening proceedings will go to Dublin rockers Fangclub.

Though first on the bill, they’re far from inexperienced having already played with the likes of The Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins as well as gearing up to release their second album.
