More than 700 new confirmed cases of coronavirus announced in UK as total rises to 3,983

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK has risen by 714 to 3,983.

That's the biggest leap in cases in a single day so far.

The Department of Health says 177 people who contracted coronavirus have died in the UK - an increase of 33 from the same time yesterday.

Nearly 67,000 tests have been carried out in the UK.

Testing is being prioritised for those who are at the most risk, while people with mild symptoms of Covid-19 are being told to self-isolate at home.

The government has said it is 'ramping up' testing so that around 25,000 tests can be carried out each day.

The latest figures were announced as Boris Johnson ordered pubs, restaurants, gyms and leisure centres to close to the public from tonight.

Speaking at today's press conference he urged the public not to go out and socialise in venues tonight ahead of the lockdown.

He was joined by chancellor Rishi Sunak who announced additional measures to protect jobs in the UK during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Sunak announced plans for a job retention scheme that would allow companies to apply for grants to cover 80 per cent of workers' wages.

Meanwhile, it was also revealed today that students will be graded based on judgements from their teachers and their previous attainment after GCSE and A Level exams were cancelled.

There are now more than 267,000 cases of coronavirus recorded worldwide with over 11,000 deaths.
