More than 600 people have been shot in Chicago this year

CHICAGO _ One person was killed and at least eight others were wounded by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend, bringing the number of people shot in the city this year to more than 600, according to data kept by the Chicago Tribune.

The first attack was reported around 3:40 a.m. Saturday after more than 24 hours without a shooting in Chicago, according to police.

A 40-year-old man was shot in the chest and legs as he sat in a car in the Woodlawn neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The lone homicide occurred early the next morning in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said. A 21-year-old man was shot around 4:50 a.m. Sunday. Officers found him lying in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound to the face.

So far this year, at least 611 people have been shot in Chicago. That's substantially lower than the previous two years when gun violence hit record levels. At this time last year, the number was 901; in 2016, it was 946.

There have been at least 127 homicides this year, again fewer than last year at this time (171) and in 2016 (172).
