More than 6,000 cigarettes and 160 litres of alcohol found in Dublin Port by Revenue officers

Thousands of cigarettes and more than 160 litres of alcohol were found by Revenue officers in Dublin Port.

The find happened last Friday, when 6,600 cigarettes and 165 litres of alcohol were in a vehicle arriving from Romania via Holyhead.

The cigarettes and alcohol had a retail value of €9,354 and represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €6,588.

A Revenue spokesman said: "Last Friday (10/05/19), as a result of routine operations, Revenue Officers in Dublin Port seized 6,600 cigarettes and 165 litres of alcohol (vodka, beer and wine) following the search of vehicle which arrived from Romania via Holyhead.

"The seized cigarettes, branded ‘Winston’, ‘Kent’ ‘Marlboro’ and ‘Pall Mall’, along with the alcohol had a combined retail value of €9,354 and represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €6,588."

The Dublin Port find was far from the biggest discovery by Revenue this week, with more than 40,000 cigarettes found in Cavan.

The spokesman continued: "Yesterday evening (14/05/19), in an intelligence led operation, Revenue Officers seized 41,200 unstamped cigarettes following the search, under warrant, of a residential property in Co. Cavan.

"The detection was made with the assistance of Revenue detector dog Bill. The unstamped cigarettes, branded ‘NZ’, ‘West’ and ‘Pall Mall’ had a retail value of €26,000 representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €20,730. 

"Investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.

"These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal alcohol and tobacco products in the shadow economy.
