More than 550 pupils and five staff sent home to self-isolate as seven more schools in Cardiff hit by coronavirus

More than 550 pupils and five staff have been sent home to work remotely and self-isolate as seven more schools in Cardiff reported coronavirus cases in the seven days to October 14.

One more case was also confirmed on Thursday, October 15, in the key exam Year 11 at the city's largest secondary Whitchurch High School.

Cardiff council said in the seven days to October 14 the following schools in the city reported confirmed cases of Covid-19. A total of 553 pupils and staff are self-isolating as a result.

Willows High School

A pupil tested positive for Covid-19 and 31 Year Nine pupils were advised by Public Health Wales to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts. No staff have been affected due to social distancing measures in place, according to the council.

Mary Immaculate Catholic High School

A total of 130 Year Eight pupils were told to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts of a positive case at the school. No staff have been affected due to social distancing measures in place.

The school sent home 224 Year 11 pupils to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case. No staff have been affected due to social distancing measures in place.

Radyr Comprehensive

A class of 32 Year Seven pupils have been told to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case. No staff have been affected due to social distancing measures in place.

Albany Primary School

Some 25 Year Five pupils and two members of staff were told to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case.

Llanedyrn Primary School

A positive case in a pupil was been confirmed at the school’s Key Stage Two resource base and as a result 14 pupils from Years Three to Six and three members of staff have been told to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts of the confirmed case.

Whitchurch High

Year 11 pupils were sent home to self-isolate earlier this week after a case was confirmed. A second case in the year group was confirmed on October 15.

In a message to parents on Thursday head teacher Mark Powell said: “We have today been notified of a positive Covid case in Year 11. The fact that the year group all left the premises during period one on Monday, October 12, has meant that contacts have been limited to 21 pupils.

“The families of these pupils have been informed and their self-isolation period will now follow."

Cardiff council said in a statement: “A positive case of Covid-19 has been confirmed at Whitchurch High School.

“Twenty-one Year 11 pupils have been advised by Public Health Wales to self-isolate for 14 days after they were identified as close contacts of the confirmed Covid-19 case. No staff members are required to self-isolate due to social distancing measures in place.”

Cardiff council confirmed on Monday afternoon that 76 students at Whitchurch have now been advised to self-isolate for 14 days. There are 395 pupils in the Year 11 year group.
