More than 520,000 people vaccinated against Covid in UK in 13 days, official figures show

More than 520,000 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in the UK in 13 days, official figures show.

As of December 20, 0.93 per cent of the population in England had received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

NHS England has published its first figures showing the number of people who have received the Covid-19 jab since Margaret Keenan became the first patient to be vaccinated in Coventry on December 8.

More than 70 per cent of people in England who have been given a vaccine for coronavirus were aged over 80, the figures show.

Boris Johnson had already announced that more than 500,000 people had been given the first of the two jabs needed, but the exact figure published on Thursday is 521,594 between December 8 and December 20.

Some 366,715 of these were over 80.

The vaccine has to be administered in two doses, 21 days apart.

All the vaccines administered so far were the first dose.

Data shows all the vaccinations from December 7 to December 13 were carried out in NHS hospital hubs.

From December 14 to December 20, vaccinations were also administered through local vaccination services such as GP practices.

Margaret Keenan, 90, was the first person in the UK to receive the Pfizer/BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine in Coventry (PA)

In total there were 60 hospital hubs and 423 local vaccination sites providing the vaccine over this period, NHS England said.

It comes as regulators could approve the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine shortly after Christmas, a medical scientist has said.

Professor Sir John Bell, Oxford University's regius professor of medicine, said he expects the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve the jab "pretty shortly".

He said: "They got data quite a long time ago but that was the first set of data.

"They receive multiple sets of data.

"So we are getting to be about prime time now, I would expect some news pretty shortly.

"I doubt we'll make Christmas now, but just after Christmas I would expect.

"I have no concerns whatsoever that the data looks better than ever."
