More than 50 taxis and private hire cabs were stopped by police in Leith today

More than 50 taxis and private hire cabs were pulled over by police and council teams during a "multi-agency road check" in Leith today.

Edinburgh Police North East took to social media this afternoon to share news of their extremely busy Friday on Commercial Street.

They say that community officers joined traffic officers, special constables and council cab officers to check taxis, private hire cabs and other vehicles. In total they stopped and inspected more than 50 cars.

The aim is to ensure people are kept safe while using taxis and such vehicles when out and about throughout the busy festive period.

Roads policing teams have been busy in and around Edinburgh in recent weeks.

Last month Edinburgh Live reported that police pulled over 61 drivers while carrying out checks on Edinburgh's West Approach Road. A team from the motorcycle unit stopped motorists for a whole host of different reasons – including drink driving.
