More than 50 cars stopped by police in Newport city centre over the weekend

More than 50 vehicles were stopped by police in Newport city centre due to Covid restrictions over the weekend.

Gwent Police confirmed that officers stopped 52 vehicles in roadside checks at Usk Way on Sunday, October 4.

A tweet from Gwent Police said that the action was part of the force's ongoing roadside checks in response to local Covid restrictions.

Gwent Police confirmed in September that it would not be carrying out road blocks as officers do not have that power under the Road Traffic Act, but that officers would carry out roadside vehicle checks under its existing powers.

Gwent Police has been conducting roadside vehicle checks since Newport's lockdown came into force on September 22.

On the first evening of Newport's lockdown, 81 vehicles were stopped by police officers on the border between Newport and Cardiff near St Mellons.

The following day, on September 23, WalesOnline reported that officers had stopped a further 87 vehicles near the border between Newport and Caerphilly, bringing the total number of vehicles stopped to 168 in the first two days of Newport's lockdown.

Gwent Police covers the local authority areas of Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Caerphilly, all of which are currently in local lockdowns, as well as Monmouthshire, which remains the only local authority in Gwent not facing extra restrictions.

The force also carried out roadside checks when Caerphilly entered local lockdown on September 8.

In the first three hours after lockdown measures were introduced in the borough, officers stopped a total of 60 cars.
