More than 400 University of Nottingham students test positive for coronavirus

More than 400 students at the University of Nottingham have tested positive for Covid-19.

Data published on the university's website also confirms that eight members of staff have contracted the virus and remain in isolation.

Of the 425 confirmed cases amongst students, 106 are in university halls, 93 are in purpose-built student accommodation and 226 are in private accomodation.

The "active confirmed cases" were recorded in the week ending October 2, 2020.

A spokesperson said cases will be high because "the University is also running its own asymptomatic testing programme which identifies cases earlier and more quickly".

They said: "While this means our case data will be higher, it means that we can identify cases that otherwise would remain undetected and thereby reduce asymptomatic transmission and the number of future cases."

Two NHS walk-in testing stations are based on University Park Campus and Jubilee Campus.

The university has a total number of 35,000 students and 10,000 members of staff.

The city's rise in coronavirus cases is a concern for public health bosses, who today told Nottinghamshire Live: “This is very worrying for Nottingham and we are working with Public Health England and with all partners in the city today to urgently consider what next steps need to be taken."
