More than 40 pupils sent home from high school in Bury amid Covid

Dozens of pupils have been sent home to isolate from a high school in Bury after a positive Covid case.

More than 40 Year 11 students were identified as being close contacts of a positive case at Philips High School in Whitefield yesterday.

It's brought the final year to an abrupt end for the group, who will now only return for assessments.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Tina Owen said: "We have unfortunately had to send over 40 year 11 pupils home this morning after being identified as being in close contact with a positive Covid case within their year group.

"This was extremely upsetting and disappointing not only for the pupils but also for us as staff. We do not make this decision. We have to follow the Guidelines set out by the Government and Public Health England.

"Year 11 pupils will be invited back at a later date for a Leavers’ Assembly and to collect their hoodies when hopefully Covid restrictions will have been lifted and they can gather together as a group."

The isolation comes as hundreds of pupils are being sent home across Greater Manchester, particularly in Bolton where cases of the Indian variant are rising rapidly.
