Police officers were called to a Newport street after a large group of people began fighting in the middle of a road.
The incident happened in Dolphin Street in Pill on Monday, June 1, at around 8.10pm. Shocked residents looked on as the fighting broke out and a heavy police presence arrived at the scene.
One resident said it “all escalated very quickly”.
“At first it seemed like a run of the mill street gathering, and then it became a fist fight. It brought out more than 40 people into the street. Eventually the situation calmed down, but as soon as the police left the scene [the fighting] erupted again. Within moments the police were called back and had to calm the situation further," said the resident, who did not want to be named.
“In all fairness the police were quick to arrive. They acted accordingly and managed to mitigate things from erupting further. I think that the community would seriously benefit some aldermen who can mediate between police and minority groups. You could feel that officers were having a hard time trying to convey what they wanted people to do and that only made things worse.”
