More than 40 homes could be built on former Hollywell engineering site

New life could be breathed into an old industrial building as plans for housing on a former engineering site are set to be given the go-ahead.

North Tyneside Council's planning department has recommended approval for the scheme which will see major upheaval on the former Hollywell Engineering site in Backworth.

David Little Pension Trust Fund is behind plans to flatten several buildings on the land, which was once part of the Eccles Colliery complex and pit yard.

There are a number of single-storey buildings still there, which were associated with mining, but are now in a poor condition. One of them - Dairy Cottage - is Grade II listed.

The scheme includes the construction of a new apartment building with 13 flats as well as 27 other houses.

Three existing properties - Backworth Lodge, Dairy Cottage and Ivy Cottage - are to be kept and converted to form six more homes.

Borough planners have come out in favour of the scheme saying it will ensure the restoration of Dairy Cottage and bring new homes to the area.

North Tyneside Council's planning committee will vote on the scheme at a meeting held on July 9.
