More than 3000 children benefit from South Lanarkshire Council's summer activities

A huge variety of fun activities were provided to more than 3000 young people across South Lanarkshire during the summer months.

The Sensational Summer Programme saw more than 750 young people taking part.

Funding was also provided to 83 local groups and organisations which delivered programmes for more than 2500 kids.

The Sensational Summer Sessions were aimed at helping to improve the wellbeing of children.

Chairwoman of the education resources committee, Councillor Katy Loudon, said: “I am immensely proud of the work that went in to ensuring young people had a variety of activities and events to take part in during the summer holiday period. The feedback we have received so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s reassuring to know that the summer programme went some way to helping those young people who needed it most. The range of activities on offer was first class.”

Government funding allowed the sessions to include kids aged 12 to 17 and their families. Enrolment was primarily targeted at those in receipt of free school meals, living with mental health, isolation, bereavement, anxiety, and financial difficulties, living in the surrounding communities.

A dedicated programme for children with more complex additional support needs ensured they were able to participate in the themed activities too.

Councillor Loudon added: “I would like to thank everyone who made this possible, not least our amazing staff and of course the young people themselves who embraced what was on offer.

“Special mention must go to our voluntary sector partners who were instrumental in delivering the sessions.”
