More than 300 pupils told to self-isolate by track and trace teams

Hundreds of pupils at five different schools have been told to self-isolate.

The students have been ordered to take the measure by the Welsh Government's Test, Trace and Protect scheme organisers. In total, 368 learners in Conwy county were instructed to self-isolate by Tuesday, June 15, according to Conwy County Borough (CB) Council. It comes after more than 400 pupils from other schools were told to isolate after Covid cases linked to gatherings.

And there has been a cluster of cases reported in Conwy county, particularly around Llandudno, Llandudno Junction and Penrhyn Bay.

Conwy CB Council said those instructed to self-isolate included:

* Ysgol Eirias in Colwyn Bay - 214 pupils (Year groups seven, ten, eleven and 13)

* Ysgol Aberconwy in Conwy - 75 (Year groups nine, 12 and 13)

* Ysgol Pen y Bryn in Upper Colwyn Bay - 27 (Reception year pupils)

* Ysgol Craig y Don in Llandudno - 26 (Year four)

It is understood that the instruction to self-isolate is based on a small number of positive test results, North Wales Live reports.

Conwy council said: "It is the Education Services Policy not to disclose information where the number is below 5, in order to protect any individual from being identified and to ensure that all individuals' privacy is maintained."

Twenty-five "linked" cases of the Delta strain of coronavirus were identified on Monday after young people gathered in Denbighshire. Earlier this month, a cluster of cases in Conwy county was identified as being from the same Delta variant of the virus.

Public Health Wales (PHW) has confirmed the Delta variant, which was first discovered in India, has taken over as the dominant strain in Wales. The number of cases rose to 315 from 131 in Wales in just two weeks from June 10. PHW has said the case numbers are expected to rise further over the coming weeks.
