More than 300 cases of Covid-19 recorded in Bristol as region's total approaches 100,000

The Bristol area has recorded 626 new cases of coronavirus, with almost half of them found in the city.

A total of 309 cases were found in Bristol city according to the latest figures from Public Health England today (August 5).

South Gloucestershire had the second-highest number of new cases in the region after 137 were found in the last 24 hours.

North Somerset recorded 92 new cases while Bath and North East Somerset found a further 88.

Today's update means there has now been a total of 99,649 confirmed cases of the virus in the Bristol region since the start of the pandemic.

The Government said a further 86 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday, bringing the UK total to 130,086.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 155,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

As of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 30,215 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

How many people have been vaccinated?

Government data up to August 4 shows that of the 85,801,167 Covid jabs given in the UK, 46,926,330 were first doses.

Some 38,874,837 were second doses.
