More than 300,000 people register to vote in ONE DAY after social media drive

More than 300,000 people registered to vote on a single day in what is believed to be the largest ever pre-deadline election surges in UK political history.

Figures released by the UK Government show a massive increase yesterday in the those now eligible to take part in next month's general election.

Among them was a whopping 206,000 young people aged 35 and under, as well as 53,000 under 45s, 28,500 under 55s 14,000 under 65s and 6,500.

It comes after a social media drive to boost the electoral roll on Friday, November 22, unofficially dubbed National Register To Vote Day by campaigners.

Brits must sign up to vote by the deadline on November 26.

Jeremy Corbyn will hope the surge of those registered to vote on December 12 will translate into seats won for his party.

Labour. who backed the #RegisterToVote Twitter campaign, are currently enjoying their strongest support from young people - it resulted in a boost of votes during the 2017 general election.

"Yesterday Labour got behind National Voter Registration Day - unlike the Conservatives - because we want you to have a say in the future of our country.

"And more than 300,000 people registered to vote."

An Electoral Commission spokesperson told The Independent: “It’s great to see so many organisations working alongside us to encourage people to register to vote. These efforts are clearly delivering results.

“However, with up to one in six people potentially unregistered there is more work to do to ensure that they can register by the 26 November deadline.'
