More than 30 girls enjoy first ever Stewartry Sirens summer rugby camp

The first Stewartry RFC girls summer rugby camp has been heralded a success after attracting more than 30 attendees.

Organised and run by members of Stewartry Sirens, the camp was put together in an effort to increase interest and participation in girls and women’s rugby in the region.

Held earlier this month, it offered activities to girls of school age from primary one right through to S6, with different activities based on age.

The older participants were introduced to the basic principles of rugby, from passing and catching to contact, tackling and rucking. The girls also took part in team building activities, and a CrossFit class run by Anne Halliday of CrossFit Castle Douglas.

Event organiser and camp leader, Lauren Gunn Nicholson, said: “The summer camp was absolutely fantastic, and I’m really pleased with how it went. It was great to see so many girls in attendance and their willingness to learn means that the future of women’s rugby in the Stewartry is in safe hands.

“It’s not always easy for women to be welcomed into a traditionally male dominated environment like rugby, so we’re so grateful for the support the girls received from local people and local businesses. It meant we could provide all the participants with t-shirts, water bottles, snacks and lunch on both days, as well as two days of rugby.”

The Sirens would like to thank the anonymous sponsors of the event, as well as the Laurie Arms for providing lunch for participants on both days, CrossFit Castle Douglas, and all the volunteers who came along across both days to help run the event.

Girls training takes place on Wednesdays from 7pm-8.30pm at Stewartry Rugby Club.
