More than 30 firefighters tackle blaze at Wallsend recycling plant overnight

More than 30 firefighters were called to a fire which broke out at a recycling plant in Wallsend overnight.

Fire crews were called to the blaze which had spread to three industrial vehicles inside the building on Davy Bank.

Six fire engines and a total of 36 firefighters were sent to the fire and were at the scene throughout Tuesday morning.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Overnight 36 firefighters and officers from Wallsend, Byker, Newcastle, Tynemouth, South Shields, Gosforth community fire stations and our command vehicle attended a fire at a recycling plant in Davy Street, Wallsend.

"Three industrial vehicles, inside a building, were severely damaged by fire, which had also spread to a small section of roofing.

"This was a very intense fire, and crews worked very hard in the face of challenging circumstances. This was again great work by our firefighters and control room staff. The fire is under investigation."
