More than 30 firefighters descend on the scene of huge blaze in 'disused care home' in Brentry

Seven fire engines were called to a huge blaze at what is believed to be a disused care home yesterday evening (Sunday, August 11).

Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the scene in Knole Lane, Brentry, at around 6pm yesterday evening, with seven fire engines and two turntable ladders.

A total of 35 firefighters are believed to have attended the incident, with Knole Road closed completely for a number of hours to allow crews to deal with the blaze.

Darren Jones, MP for Bristol North West tweeted in praise of the firefighters working at the scene, which he identified as an 'old care home'.

He wrote: "Thanks once again to Avon Fire and Rescue - after the pub on Gainsborough Square, SIMs Metal, and the Premier Inn, they're now dealing with a fire at the old care home in Brentry.

"Local residents should keep windows and doors shut whilst the fire is being put out."

With thick smoke billowing from the site of the blaze, residents living nearby were urged to keep their doors and windows closed for the duration of the incident.

One eyewitness said: "The smell is pretty severe, it’s really noticeable even though we’re 4-5 streets away.

"The air feels really thick and as an asthma sufferer it’s making me cough.”

It is not yet known what caused the incident. The fire service have been contacted this morning for further information.

The road reopened shortly before 10pm yesterday evening, with all emergency services reportedly leaving the scene.
