More than $3 million (£1.5m) worth of cocaine has washed up on a beach in New Zealand, with police warning more could appear.

Nineteen packages containing the Class A drug were found on Bethells Beach in West Auckland on Wednesday.

The blue packages were reportedly found by locals who were walking nearby.

Detective Inspector Colin Parmenter told Stuff that customs had helped officers complete a “thorough” search of the beach and surrounding area.

He added: “There is a small possibility that further packages may turn up on the beach and we ask any members of the public to contact us immediately if they do.

“Our inquiries are ongoing to identify where these drugs have come from."

A police helicopter is set to conduct a further search of the area on Thursday, with regular patrols in coming days.

Jose Sousa-Santos, a Pacific crime researcher at Massey University in New Zealand, told the Guardian that there was a "strong possibility" the drugs had been trafficked across the Tasman from Australia.

According to the Global Drug Survey, New Zealand is the most expensive place in the world to buy a gram of cocaine at $375.
