More than 3,500 affordable homes to be built in Glasgow over next two years as part of £104m investment

More than £104 million will be invested in thousands of affordable houses across Glasgow over the next two years.

It was confirmed at the city administration committee on Thursday that the money is available to help develop more than 3500 homes through the Affordable Housing Supply Programme. (AHSP)

The funding is not only for the continuation of ongoing projects and the beginning of new ones, but also for medical adaptation to homes in Glasgow, allowing tenants who need extra care and assistance, to remain in their own accommodation.

There are 1325 homes in ongoing projects, with some of the biggest developments in Govan, Dalmarnock, and Govanhill.

A further 2094 new developments in Calton, Hamiltonhill, and the former Victoria Hospital site in the south side will begin in due course with another 106 affordable homes currently in development in East Balornock.

Plans were discussed at the city administration committee on Thursday morning.

Councillor Kenny McLean said: “This year’s budget is just over £104 million which represents an increase of 10 per cent on the budget for 2018/19.

“This level of house building will boost Glasgow’s economy, bring in jobs and create work experience opportunities across the city. It will also contribute to the council’s income.

“The programme is being delivered by 22 housing associations – 15 of which are community based while seven are regional or national.”

The increase in funding for affordable homes in Glasgow will allow the city to contribute to the Scottish Government ’s More Homes target of 50,000 new affordable (35,000 for social rent) homes by 2021.

The Scottish Government has also indicated the AHSP budget for 2020/21 in Glasgow will increase further, to over £110million.
