More than 22,000 people test positive for Coronavirus in ONE WEEK in Greater Manchester - as one borough sees 131% rise

More than 22,000 people tested positive for Coronavirus in just one week in Greater Manchester, new data has revealed.

And cases are continuing to rise in all ten boroughs - with five claiming figures higher than the national average as of week ending December 17.

Trafford continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate in Greater Manchester, with a rate of 1109.9 cases per 100,000 people.

It was announced yesterday, December 20, that the figure had hit over one thousand for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

The lowest infection rate is in Wigan, where the rate is 577.2 cases per 100,000 people, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 800.8 cases per 100,000 population.

The infection rate in the region is lower than the national average, which is 855.4 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 22,707 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on December 17.

The Greater Manchester weekly total has increased by 9773 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was up 76 per cent in the last week..

The infection rate is higher than the national average in five areas of Greater Manchester.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on December 12, a total of 229 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 26 more than the week before, a rise of 13%.

On Tuesday December 14, there were 35 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is three fewer than a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions, the figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending December 17, a total of 35 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 8 fewer than the week before.

Rochdale

There was a rise of 30 per cent in cases in Rochdale over the week ending December 17, and the infection rate is now 610.3 cases per 100,000 population.

Rochdale recorded 1365 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 312 more than the previous week.

Trafford

In Trafford, there were 2637 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending December 17, which is 1045 more than the previous 7 days.

Trafford has the highest infection rate in the region. The infection rate in Trafford is up slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is up by 66 per cent.

Salford

In Salford, the latest infection rate is 934.5 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone up by 89 per cent.

A total of 2455 people tested positive for Covid in Salford over the seven days ending on December 17, which is 1154 more than the week before.

Oldham

Oldham is an area where the trend is up. The latest infection rate here is 579.9 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 1378 cases recorded in Oldham, which is 501 more than the previous week - a rise of 57 per cent.

Wigan

Wigan, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 1909 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending December 17, which is 548 more than the previous 7 days.

The coronavirus infection rate in Wigan is now 577.2 cases per 100,000 people and is up by 40 per cent week-on-week.

Stockport

The trend is up in Stockport, where there were 2625 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending December 17, which is 1162 more than the previous 7 days. That is up by 79 per cent compared to the previous week.

The latest infection rate in Stockport is 892.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is higher than the national average.

Bolton

In Bolton, the number of cases is up by 71 per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 585.3 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 1687 positive Covid-19 tests in Bolton in the week ending December 17, which was 699 more than the previous 7 days.

Bury

Bury recorded 1750 coronavirus cases, which is 716 more than in the previous seven days.

The latest infection rate in Bury is 917.6 cases per 100,000 people and that is up 69 per cent week-on-week.

Manchester

There were 5498 positive tests over the last week in Manchester, which is 3118 more than in the previous week.

The week-on-week trend in Manchester is up by 131 per cent and the latest infection rate is 989.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Tameside

Tameside saw a total of 1403 cases in the week ending December 17, which is 518 more than the previous week. That is a rise of 59 per cent.

In Tameside, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 617.7 cases per 100,000 people.
