More than 200 police carry out London dawn raids on suspected drug dealers

More than 200 police carried out dawn raids on suspected drug dealers accused of fuelling violence that has claimed young lives in London.

Six men aged 18 to 26 and a 19-year-old woman were arrested at nine addresses across Greenwich.

At one address, a Porsche was parked outside a small block of flats. Cocaine and Class B drugs were seized.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said: “We are targeting those involved in supplying drugs, driving violent crime. This is a means of getting them into prison and reducing knife crime and drug related violence.

“They are harmful influences in communities. Organised criminals who fuel anti-social behaviour, knife-related violence and drugs-related violence.

“We see reductions in knife crime victims under 25 by doing these kinds of operations.”

Dan Thorpe, leader of Greenwich Council, attended the raid.

He said: “Clearly all of us are increasingly concerned about the impact knife crime and serious violence is having on communities across London, and so I think it’s good for me to be here working closely with the police to take action.

“We had a spike in knife crime for a period last year, and it’s actually come down a bit since then, but it’s not just knife crime, it’s [rising] serious violence and violence linked to drugs.

“This will have a big impact and make sure young people are safer over the holidays.”

Scotland Yard chief Cressida Dick recently accused middle class drug takers of having “blood on their hands” for financing the trade fuelling violent crime in London.
