More than 200 homes earmarked for outskirts of Manchester city centre as part of £4bn masterplan

Plans have been submitted to construct more than 200 homes on the outskirts of Manchester city centre as part of the £4bn Victoria North masterplan.

Portwood Developments is seeking permission to build two apartment buildings, 11 and 13 storeys high, in place of a car park on Rochdale Road.

According to the proposals, the blocks would house 223 one, two and three-bedroom flats, with 14 duplex townhouses facing onto Gould Street and Back St George Street.

More than 130sqm of commercial floorspace, new paths and landscaping would also be provided at the site, which neighbours an off-licence and the Marble Arch pub.

Up to 30 car parking spaces will be provided underground along with 232 cycle parking spaces, the Local Democracy Reporting service has said.

A statement submitted with the application said: "The development will create a high quality and striking residential led scheme in an appropriate and accessible town centre location.

"The redevelopment of the site, in addition to public realm and landscaping will improve the street scene and enhance connectivity and permeability of the site with the wider community.

"It will integrate with adjacent developments and the surrounding area, to play its role creating an attractive and prosperous area of Manchester."

If approved, the development would also have another neighbour in Gasworks New Town, the £220m scheme with 1,224 homes, a 33-storey tower and a park approved in July.

Both sites fall within Victoria North, the ambitious project helmed by Manchester council and the Far East Consortium which aims to build 15,000 new homes in north Manchester.
